Danish (Pastry)

Danish on a plate

A Danish is a sweet pastry that is popular in coffeeshops throughout the world. A Danish consists of a thin buttered dough which is folded into many layers. The dough is typically made of flour, yeast, milk, eggs, and the pastry itself is often embellished with icing, nuts (especially almonds), or fruit preserves.

In spite of the name, the Danish was not in fact created in Denmark, where the equivalent is known as a Vienna pastry (Wienerbrød, literally Vienna Bread).
