The IFBF is a collective of dues-paying farmers throughout Iowa, though anyone can join the organization.

The IFBF is active in promoting their policies and grassroots initiatives in government. The IFBF is affiliated with the Farm Bureau Financial Services of Iowa, which was established in 1939.

Mission[edit]

According to the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, their mission is as follows:[1]

An organization dedicated to helping farm families prosper and improve their quality of life.[2]

Background[edit]

The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) was founded in 1918 by a group of farmers and community members, including teachers, bankers and merchants. The aim of the federation was "to better themselves, their families, their industry and their state."[3]

In 1939, Iowa Farm Bureau Financial Services was founded by the IFBF. The company offered farmers liability insurance should a crop fail. The service expanded over the decades to include auto, home, life and property insurance.[4]

The IFBF includes 100 county chapters, each of which has its own board, charters and bylaws. Representatives are elected to the statewide bureau, which is composed of an 11-member board; each county's delegate votes to elect members to the state bureau board. The IFBF has almost 160,000 members across Iowa.[3] The IFBF is active in policy development and legislation within Iowa through lobbying and local advocacy.[5][6]

Lobbying and advocacy[edit]

In 2015, the IFBF worked on several policy bills and followed 69 bills during the Idaho state congressional 2015 session. The IFBF publishes Capital Reflections, which monitors and reports on legislative activity that impacts farming and agriculture; it covers bill passage, departmental studies and regulation passage.[7] In 2016, Capital Reflections became the Spokesman.[8] Below is a list of the bills that Matthew Steinfeldt, IFBF's lobbyist worked on in 2015 and early 2016, including the IFBF's stance on the bill.[9]
