Indiana is a state in the United States that is located in the Midwestern region. It is the 38th-largest state in terms of land area and the 17th-most populated state in the United States. Indianapolis serves as the state's capital and biggest city. Indiana was added to the United States as the 19th state on December 11, 1816, becoming the first state to do so. The state is bordered on the northwest by Lake Michigan, on the north by Michigan, on the east by Ohio, on the south and southeast by the Ohio River and Kentucky, and on the west by the Wabash River and the state of Illinois.
Different indigenous groups have inhabited Indiana for thousands of years, some of which were exiled by the United States government between 1800 and 1836. Although Indiana became a state in 1816, native tribes continued to control a major portion of the land long after the state was awarded statehood. As a result, Indiana's settlement patterns have reflected the regional cultural segmentation that exists in the Eastern United States; the state's northernmost tier was predominantly populated by people from New England and New York, Central Indiana by migrants from the Mid-Atlantic states and neighbouring Ohio, and Southern Indiana by settlers from the Upland South, particularly Kentucky and Tennessee, respectively.
A varied economy, Indiana's gross state product (GSP) in 2019 will be $377.1 billion, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Several metropolitan centres with populations more than 100,000 people are found throughout the state, as well as a number of smaller cities and villages. Indiana is home to several professional sports clubs, including the NFL's Indianapolis Colts and the NBA's Indiana Pacers, and it is also the site of several significant competitive events, like the Indianapolis 500, which takes place every year throughout the state.
