The University of Denver is a private college located in Denver, Colorado. Methodists founded it in 1864, making it the oldest independent private university in the Rocky Mountain Region of the United States. In 1880, it was renamed the University of Denver although its legal name continues to be "Colorado Seminary."

It is best known for its collegiate winter sports programs, having won eight national titles in men's ice hockey (the school's top spectator sport) and 24 national team skiing titles (the most of any school).

The Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management had its first graduating class in 1946, making it one of the oldest college hotel school programs in the United States.

DU hosts 20 fraternities and sororities. Currently, 22% of DU's students are involved with fraternities and sororities, and many of those students also hold positions in the Undergraduate Student Government, the University of Denver Programs Board (DUPB), Student Media Board, and many other organizations across campus.[3]

In September 2020, the University of Denver suspended 38 members of its men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams after the students attended a large, off-campus party that violated COVID-19 restrictions.[4]
