Hamdi v. Rumsfeld is a 2004 U.S. Supreme Court decision concerning the authority of the President to detain enemy combatants.
The petitioner, Hamdi, was considered to be an American citizen based on his birth in Louisiana. He was caught in Afghanistan, supposedly fighting with the Taliban. He was held in a naval Brig in Charleston, South Carolina, but later the Supreme Court ruled that he should have had due process of Law.
