From Ballotpedia An Independence Sales Tax Measure was on the August 4, 2009 ballot in Jackson County for voters in the City of Independence. The measure called for a new sales tax that would have increased the number of police officers patrolling the city.[1]
The measure was defeated.[2]
The proposed 3/8 cent sales tax was expected to generate approximately $6 million per year. Funds would have been directed towards hiring 42 new police officers, 18 department employees and funding a new police station.[1] The new police station project was developed in light of recent statistics that revealed that crime had increased 30 percent in the city.[2]
