Magallanes And Chilean Antarctica Region

The Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region is the southern Region of Chile. Its capital is Punta Arenas. The region has many National Parks including the Bernardo O'Higgins, Torres del Paine, Yendegaia and many others. The most important towns and cities are: Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, Porvenir and the southern city of the world (before Antarctica) Puerto Williams.

The Region is located in Patagonia and has important sites like the Strait of Magellan, Cape Horn, the Beagle Channel and the Drake Passage.

Chile holds a national claim over part of Antarctica, politically the Chilean Antarctic Territory is included in the Region.

The Region was going the be the scenario of a war between Chile and Argentina in 1978 (See Beagle Conflict) but the conflict was resolved by the Pope John Paul II and the war was avoided.
