Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Olympic Bid Referendum (May 2011)

A referendum concerning hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics was approved in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, May 8, 2011.^[1] The referendum asked residents if they supported Munich's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics, which would have partially been held in the community if the city was chosen. The referendum did not have a binding effect on the Olympic committee's decision, but according to Ludwig Hartmann, founder of the NOlympia group, if a majority of voters had been against the games the committee would not award it to the city.^[2]

Support[edit]

A group in favor of hosting the 2018 Olympics in the city collected signatures to obtain a referendum vote on the issue.^[3]

Opposition[edit]

Some residents felt that hosting the games would have been environmentally unsound for the region. The group opposed to the bid collected near 2,500 signatures to force the referendum on to the ballot.^[4]
