According to Google trends, 2021 saw a drop in the times the world did Google searches for the word "atheist".[2] So far, it's a 17 year low for the times people Google the word "atheist" in a year.

Historically, religiosity increases during pandemics. Nearly three-in-ten U.S. adults say the outbreak has boosted their faith; about four-in-ten say it has tightened family bonds.[3]

2021 saw a drop in the times the world did Google searches for the word atheism according to Google trends.[4]. So far, it's a 17 year low for the times people Google the word "atheist" in a year.

In January 2004, according to Google Trends, the Google search "atheist" had a score of 43 out of 100. On December 23, 2021, according to Google Trends, the Google search "atheist" had a score of 30 out of 100. The Google search "atheist" is probably the most popular atheism related Google search.

On December 23, 2021, according to Google Trends, the Google search "atheist" had a score of 30 out of 100. So that is a 10 point drop in 2021. Pandemics and crises have a history of causing people to be more religious.[5]

Contrastly, In January 2004, according to Google Trends, the Google search "Jesus" had a score of 57 out of 100. On December 23, 2021, according to Google Trends, the Google search "Jesus" had a score of 60 out of 100. The Google search Jesus is probably the most popular Christianity related Google search.

New Atheism is a form of militant atheism.

Lawrence Krauss is a new atheist.

On March 7, 2018, The Australian reported that Lawrence Krauss was sent on paid leave by Arizona University in wake of harassment allegations against him and that he is no longer allowed on campus.[6]

In April of 2018, David Silverman, ex-president of the American Atheists organization, was fired due to allegations of financial conflicts and sexual assault.[7]

As can be seen on the rightward side of the Google trends graph, post sexual harassment allegations against Lawrence Krauss and David Silverman, searches for atheism related topics have markedly in the United States.

Richard Dawkins is still widely criticized for causing embarrassment to his fellow atheists via his Elevatorgate scandal and for igniting deep fractures in the atheist movement.[8] For example, on November 26, 2013, the atheist activist and blogger Jen McCreight posted at Twitter the message: "Did anyone on Dawkins AMA ask how he feels about singlehandedly destroying the atheist movement with the Dear Muslima yet?"[9] In December of 2013, atheist Jack Vance at Atheist Revolution called July 2, 2011, which is the day that Elevatorgate occurred, "The day the atheist movement died."[10]

According to the web traffic tracking company Quantcast, the web traffic of Richard Dawkins' website fell in 2012.[11] By October 2014, the web traffic for his website fell to a lower level according to Quantcast.[12]

In October of 2012, Rebecca Watson published a story about Elevatorgate and its aftermath in Slate entitled, It Stands to Reason, Skeptics Can Be Sexist Too: I spoke out about sexual harassment among atheists and scientists. Then came the rape threats.[13]
