Phileō "love" is the Greek word for brotherly love or close friendship. The name for the city of Philadelphia is derived from this word.

When Jesus asked Peter "Do you love me?" the word he used in Greek was agape love. Peter answered "Lord, thou knowest that I love thee." In Greek, Peter used phileō in his reply.^[1]

Philos (fy-loss) is thus one of four Greek words translated into English as "love." The other three are "agape" (ag-uh-pay) and "storge" (stor-gay) and "eros" (eh-ross).
