Kanem was a west African kingdom situated to the north-east of Lake Chad under the Sefuwa Dynasty which existed from the 10c to the 19c. The strength of Kanem relied upon its position between the forest and the desert and the ability to trade salt and copper from the north with palm nuts and cottons from the south. In the 15c Kanem ceded most of its power to Bornu.
