Random Number

A random number is one that is drawn from a set of possible values, each of which is equally probable.[1]

Some traditional means of generating random numbers are throwing dice or casting lots. Democracy in Athens operated in part on casting lots from a pool of candidates in a process called sortition.

Jurors are chosen from the Jury Pool at random for Voir Dire.[2] This is likely done via a computer software pseudo random number generator (PRNG) that is seeded with a computer clock. Students seeking entry into charter schools are chosen via a lottery.

Hardware (true) random number generators (TRNG) are available in various formats, including small USB packages.
