Isle Of Arran

The Isle of Arran is the largest island situated in the Firth of Clyde, off the West Coast of Scotland. Often called 'Scotland in miniature' for its range and wealth of scenery. All this is within easy reach of Glasgow, making it an ideal holiday destination.

Brodick is the main ferry port where CalMac ferries sail to Ardrossan, Ayrshire. Lochranza, in the North-West of the island, has a smaller ferry which sails to Claonaig, Kintyre in the summer and to Tarbert, also Kintyre, in the winter. Lamlash, Blackwaterfoot & Whiting Bay are the other main villages on the island.

Tourism is the main source of income. Other industries include agriculture and the production of whisky, beer, toiletries, crafts and many other small cottage industries. The harshness of living on the island is the theme of "Man of Aran" (1934) a famous documentary film by Robert J. Flaherty.

Thanks to the proximity of the Gulf Stream the island lies on the margins of a microclimate that allows subtropical plants such as palm trees to flourish in the gardens of Brodick Castle.^[1]
