Defeat

To defeat someone (or a group) is to best or overcome them in a contest such as a battle, election, sports match, or to frustrate their aims and ambitions in some way.

As a noun, a defeat is the instance of being defeated.

Due to their excecesive pride and hyper egalitarianism, liberals cannot stand the idea of defeat and try to avoid the concept defeat through the giving of participation trophies in children's athletic events. They cannot bear the thought of their offspring being defeated.
