Transylvania University is a private university located in Lexington, Kentucky known for its small university size and being the highest ranked university in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Founded in 1780, it is the oldest university in Kentucky and among the oldest in the nation.
Its most notable graduates include: Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, two U.S. vice presidents, John C. Breckinridge and Richard Mentor Johnson, and two U.S. Supreme Court justices, John Marshall Harlan and Samuel Freeman Miller.
In Fall 2020, Transy fell into controversy by granting admission to High school student Nick Sandmann who had worn a MAGA hat while visiting the Lincoln Memorial on a school field trip.
