Slave State

In the period preceding the American Civil War, a slave state was a state allowing slavery. There was much controversy over the admission of new states, as their admission as slave states could have an impact on federal laws. Eventually a compromise was reached where states North of the 30° 36° latitude were free states, and South of that were slave states.
