Brave is an internet browser developed by Brave Software, Inc. based on the Chromium browser. Brave blocks known advertisements and trackers by default, as well as known phishing and malware-serving websites. It also offers a system through which its users can give monetary tips to websites or social media account owners.[1] Brave supports Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. The current version features five default search engines: Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google, Startpage and Yahoo.[2] They also use Tor in their private browsing mode.[3]

Brave was founded on May 28, 2015, by the conservative CEO Brendan Eich[

[4], the co-founder of Mozilla[5] and creator of the javascript programming language.[6] It was originally situated in Delaware, where it was known as Hyperware Labs, Inc. They later moved to California where they were renamed as Brave Software, Inc.

On February 14, 2019, the social media network Gab developed a web browser named Dissenter, an open source web browser based on Brave,[7] that allows conversations around individual URLs and creates a public square on them where anyone can leave a comment.[8]

Growth[edit]

Brave has benefited from increasing awareness of the importance of privacy among consumers. The latest statistics show the browser now attracts 50 million monthly users, which is double the figure from a year ago, and quadruple the year before that.[9] TechRadar says of Brave,
"It has a lot of ground to make up before it can hope to challenge the dominance of Google and other incumbents. However, as Eich’s story demonstrates, the internet is littered with the corpses of fallen giants. The cry for greater privacy on the web is growing louder and louder, and Brave has put itself in a position to ride the zeitgeist." -TechRadar[10]
