NFL and alcohol: the NFL is one of the biggest promoters of alcoholism in the United States, through NFL advertising, branding, promotions, and addicting many of the players.
The premature death of many NFL players is attributed to alcohol, and it also cuts short many of their careers. The NFL is a significance source of drunk driving and excessive alcohol consumption.
The NFL takes no steps to reduce the amount of alcohol served and consumed at football games. The blood-alcohol content (BAC) of fans at football games and sports bars is substantial, and among "tailgaters" it is even higher. In one estimate, "tailgaters are 14 times as likely as other football fans to leave a game with a BAC that is over-the-limit."[1]
For many NFL fans, their addiction to the game is just an excuse to drink alcohol. The drinking by NFL fans at stadiums during games is astronomical, as shown by this survey:[2]
Here’s how the fans rank in drinks per game:Cincinnati Bengals – 5.2
Denver Broncos – 4.4 ....
Baltimore Ravens – 4.7
Buffalo Bills – 4.5
Chicago Bears – 4.5
Carolina Panthers – 4.4
