Wood is a stiff material made from plants (mostly trees), which is often used for construction purposes. The Merriam Webster dictionary defines wood as "the hard fibrous substance consisting basically of xylem that makes up the greater part of the stems, branches, and roots of trees or shrubs beneath the bark and is found to a limited extent in herbaceous plants."[1] Wood is used primarily in carpentry, though it may also be used in creating homes, crosses, or for making a fire. Depending on the kind of tree the wood came from, the wood will have different properties.

Most wood used for making things comes from trees; bamboo (considered by taxonomists to be a kind of grass) is an exception. In the works of Chaucer, "tree" is used as a synonym for wood.[2]
