The Great American Outdoors Act, also known as S.3422, is a landmark conservation bill introduced by Cory Gardner (R–CO) that would establish guaranteed funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a program federally established in 1965 that appropriated funds to public land and water. Being bipartisan, the legislation drew support from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress, passing both chambers and quickly proceeded to being signed by President Trump.
The bill was sponsored and introduced by Republican Sen. Cory Gardner on March 9, 2020. Passing the U.S. House of Representatives on a 310–107 vote and the Senate on a 73–25 majority,[1] the legislation was signed by President Trump on August 4, 2020.[2]
Some libertarian conservatives have voiced opposition to S.3422, noting its increase of federal government powers.[3][4]
