Basra (Arabic: Al Basrah) is the second largest city and main port of Iraq, located in the south of the country on the Shatt al-Arab waterway. It is the metropolis of the Shi'ite south of Iraq, and the centre of the country's oil industry. Following the Second Gulf War of 2003, Basra was occupied by British forces until 2007, when conttrol was formally ceded to the Iraqi authorities.
