The Algerian War of Independence (1954 - 1962) was a war fought between France and Algeria, resulting in Algerian independence. The French loss marked the first defeat of a Western army by a non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades. It should also be noted that even though France had over eight times the number of soldiers as Algeria, and all of the French soldiers supposedly had superior training, the Algerian guerrillas still won.
The 1966 film, The Battle of Algiers, was based on the events of the Algerian War of Independence.
