Winnipeg is the capital and largest city of Manitoba, a province of Canada. The city is north of the geographical center of North America, and is the "Gateway to the West" in Canada, were the Prairies open up from the Canadian Shield. Its population as of the 2016 census is 705,244 (up 6.3% from 2011).^[1]

Winnipeg Jets (NHL) (Hockey) - Until 1996 Winnipeg had an NHL team, which came into the league from the now-defunct World Hockey Association in 1979. Due to economic circumstances and an attempt to grow interest in hockey in the Southern United States however, the team moved to Phoenix, Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes. Considerable interest to bring NHL Hockey back to Winnipeg was displayed in the years since then, enough to bring the NHL back in 2011 when the Atlanta Thrashers were bought by a Winnipeg-based group and brought to Winnipeg as the new version of the Winnipeg Jets, which calls Bell MTS Place its home arena. The Manitoba Moose, a minor league team in the American Hockey League, formerly played in the then-MTS Centre until the team moved to St. John's, Newfoundland in 2011 and became the St. John's IceCaps.
