Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd. (相模ゴム工業株式会社, Sagami Gomu Kogyo Kabushikigaisha) is a rubber product manufacturer with its head office in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan[1]. Its product range includes latex/non-latex condoms and other rubber products.[2]. Established in 1934[3][4], Sagami is the first condom manufacturer in Japan and the first in the world to produce polyurethane condoms and coloured condoms[5].

Overview[edit]

Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd. is the first latex condom manufacturer in Japan that produces polyurethane condoms[6]. In addition to healthcare product manufacturing, its business includes plastic product manufacturing, social welfare services and medical device class II manufacturing. Sagami also sells three types of medical device, including contraceptive condoms for men, vaginal ultrasound probe covers[7] and uterine catheters for semen injection.

History[edit]

1934 – Established Asahi Latex Chemical Research Institute (Tokyo Meguro) [8][9]. 1944 – Established Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd. [8] [9]

1975 – Established joint venture in Malaysia (currently Sagami Manufacturers Sdn. Bhd.) [6][10].

1985 – Acquired French condom manufacturer "Radiatex" and set up sales office in Europe [6].

Saku Matsukawa, the founder of Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd., was born in 1892 (Meiji 25). She was the daughter of a silk mill manager in Koayu-mura, Aiko-gun. Unsatisfied with the quality of rubber condoms available in pharmacies, she established Asahi Latex Chemical Research Center in 1934 after the death of her husband. In December 1944, she established Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd in Atsugi. The first president was Shigeo Takeuchi, a pharmacist and a researcher who helped establish Asahi Latex Chemical Research Center. After the death of Takeuchi in 1969, Matsukawa became the president and later the chairman in 1973 [9]. Also, Saku Matsukawa was the first president of Soroptimist Japan, chairman of the National Chamber of Commerce and Women's Federation [9]. In 1985 she was declared an honorary citizen of Atsugi

Condoms[edit]

Sagami manufactures both polyurethane (PU) condoms and natural rubber latex condoms [11]. The PU condom manufacturing plant is in Ipoh, Malaysia while the latex condom manufacturing plant is still located in its original location, Atsugi, Kanagawa prefecture in Japan.

"Sagami Original" is a brand of polyurethane (PU) condoms. Its products include "Sagami Original 0.02" with a thickness of 20 microns and "Sagami Original 0.01" with a thickness of 10 microns [11].

The main sales channel for Sagami in Japan is drugstores yet its products are also available on its retail website "Sagami Shop" and other e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Rakuten. As for Japanese convenience stores, Sagami’s products are only sold at Daily Yamazaki.

Timing Aid is a medical device (self-syringe kit) for self-intracavitary injection targeting couples with sexual dysfunctions (like erectile dysfunctions, ejaculation disorder, pain in sexual intercourse, sexual aversion, etc.). The mechanism is to collect semen (sperm) from a male partner and inject it into the cervix inside the virginal cavity of a female partner.

Overseas Market[edit]

Besides its own brand, Sagami Original, Sagami Rubber Industries Co., Ltd also produces polyurethane (PU) condoms for brands from all over the world [11].

Asia[edit]

Sagami’s first overseas market was South Korea back in 2002. Then Sagami entered the Vietnam and Hong Kong in 2005 and 2007 respectively. In Hong Kong, Sagami’s products are available in pharmacy chains and convenience stores, and the official distributor is Trade Anywhere Ltd [13]. After that, Sagami has explored different markets in Asia such as Armenia, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand [11].

Sagami condoms are available in Iran, Bahrain, Qatar and Egypt [14]

Europe[edit]

Sagami condoms are available in Belarus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, Poland, Croatia, Latvia, Russia, Slovenia, Moldova and the United Kingdom.[11]

Sagami also manufactures OEM condoms for different brands in Europe, for instance, "Vizit Nano Tech" in Russia, "Control Free" in Italy, "Protex Original 0.02" in France, "Durex Deluxe" in the United Kingdom, "Ceylor Original 0.02" in Switzerland, "RFSU Zenith Naked" in Sweden, "Blausiegel Sensitive" and "Billy Boy ultra-sensitive" in Germany[11], etc.

Oceania[edit]

Sagami condoms are available in Australia, New Zealand, and Solomon Islands.[11]

South America[edit]

Sagami condoms are sold in Mexico and Brazil under the brand name "SICO Thermaxx Skin 0.02" and "Blausiegel Original 0.02" [11] respectively.

Advertising and Marketing[edit]

  • Act of Love - In 2016, Sagami Original ran a campaign "Act of Love". A website was developed to showcase the courtship behaviours of 73 different animals[17] and a two-minute short choreography video was created. As of June 2020, the video has received more than 1 million views on YouTube [18]
