Ether is a functional group, where two chemical chains are joined by an oxygen atom. An ether molecule has the generic chemical formula of ROR.

Ether is also the common name for diethyl ether (CH3CH2OCH2CH3), a compound which is used as an organic solvent and which has been used as a primitive anasthetic.
