Homework Ten Answers - Student Eight

1. Pick a question that you missed on the midterm exam, and describe several different ways that you could have figured out the correct answer instead.

Probably the extra credit was my biggest folly on the test. The question was, The NFL “San Francisco 49ers” are named after which historic event? I eliminated two out of the four answers and was left with two different years and the gold rush, one saying the gold rush occurred in 1849 and the other in 1749. I put down 1749 and got the question wrong, but if I thought about it more thoroughly I would have realized that back in the 1750s California wasn’t being settled, people had barely made it across the Appalachians. Silly me.

Excellent analysis.

7. Explain the cartoon.

The cartoon depicted Theodore Roosevelt bringing both Japan and Russia back in line after the Russo-Japanese war with the Treaty of Portsmouth.

Correct.

Debate: Should government be able to interfere with free enterprise by establishing maximum working hours for men?

Not really, the government shouldn’t stop people from being able to work. If someone wants to work himself to death, well it is his fault. There should be consequences for bosses who take advantage of others through this, the idea of overtime pay is a great example.

Well-reasoned answer.

H5. Do you think the ideas of Darwinism—survival of the fittest—made World War I so horrific?

While it wasn’t the cause of the war, Darwinism, like all cultural fads it played a huge part in inspiring those involved to follow its beliefs and this led to not just a simple war for dominance but a quest for racial superiority.

Correct.

Debate: Was Prohibition desirable? Has alcohol caused more harm than good?

Simply put In my opinion alcoholic drinks aren’t wrong. The issue of how MUCH you drink is an issue, but one that I feel would be impossible to control without taking away human rights. There are many ways now of keeping control of the issue of people getting drunk, such as bars being held accountable of customers who leave drunk. As always people can always drink to much alcohol on their own and its seems that will always be an issue.

OK. (Note: "too much," not "to much")

Debate: Was it discriminatory not to include girls and women in this draft?

Not at all, in fact the government was acting in its best interest by excluding women from their armies. Studies have shown that women are inferior in combat situations. There wasn’t a desperate need for them when there was an ample supply of young men being drafted.

Good, logical analysis.
