The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is the police force in the city of Calgary, Alberta. It is the largest police force in Alberta and the third-largest municipal police force in Canada, after the Toronto Police Service and the Montreal Police Service.
The CPS was first established on February 7, 1885, with Jack Ingram as its first chief. It was also the first police force in Canada to have a female police chief when Christine Silverberg was named to the position. Following on police forces in the United States that use air support as part of their operations, the CPS became the first police force in Canada to use an air support unit when it created its Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety (HAWCS) unit in 1993 as a result of the on-duty hit-and-run death of CPS Constable Rick Sonnenberg, who had been killed while attempting to stop a stolen vehicle.
There are currently 2200 sworn members and 650 unsworn members in the CPS.
Controversy[edit]
Under Calgary's leftist then-mayor Naheed Nenshi and now under current mayor Jyoti Gondek, the CPS has been involved in some recent controversies:
- The CPS was one of the police forces involved in persecution of Bill Whatcott, a Canadian pro-family activist and the leader of the Canadian branch of MassResistance, who opposes the homosexual agenda and has spoken out in public and online against the dangers of homosexual behavior to the health of its practitioners; Whatcott was hit with a frivolous $104 million lawsuit by homosexual activists (and whose participating litigants also include Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne, an open lesbian[1]) for handing out flyers speaking the truth about homosexuality at a Toronto "gay pride" parade in 2016,[2] and was also served with a false arrest warrant against him on a false charge of "inciting hatred" by the Wynne-backed Ontario Attorney General's office. After surrendering to the CPS in Calgary on June 22, 2018 (amid a protest by Christian activists against his illegal arrest outside the police station[3]) with the intent of challenging the false charge, Whatcott was subjected to illegal persecution and criminal mistreatment on the false charge by the CPS, as well as by Toronto police when he was later transferred to that city (which included being falsely branded a "hate criminal" and being denied food and needed medication and otherwise criminally abused by a corrupt CPS officer, being locked up with dangerous, drug-addicted and mentally ill criminals and denied personal care items in jails in both Calgary and Toronto, being criminally harassed by corrupt homosexual Toronto Police Service officer Sgt. Henry Dyck, and unjustly losing his job as an Alberta oil fields bus driver due to coercion against his employer by homosexual activists[4]), all in attempts to illegally deny Whatcott his right to free speech to spread the truth about the dangers of homosexuality. Whatcott unjustly faced up to two years in prison for what his persecutors speciously claim is "Wilful [sic] Promotion of Hatred against an identifiable group" for passing out the pamphlets at the "gay pride" parade – even though the pamphlets also talked about God's love and "the free gift of eternal life" that comes through repenting of all sin.[5] The homosexual activists who originally filed the frivolous lawsuit against him dropped the lawsuit in 2019, but in March that year, Whatcott was fined $55,000 for publishing flyers telling the true gender of a gender-confused local political candidate in Vancouver,[6] and he continued to be illegally and criminally harassed by the LGBTQ movement and its corrupt liberal political allies for speaking the truth about homosexuality, its related sexual behaviors and their resulting consequences as he faced a trial on the false charges against him in Toronto in June 2020.[1]
- The CPS was also involved in targeting a bar and restaurant called Outlaws Taphouse and Bar, which was driven out of business by heavy-handed pandemic-related government bureaucracy by Alberta Health Services, the City of Calgary, the provincial Occupational Health and Safety department and the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission, which insisted on the enforcement of unconstitutional CCP flu pandemic edicts (including face mask diktats, refusal to allow for mask exemptions, imposition of unreasonable orders on the bar and stripping of their food handling permit, their business license and their liquor license, followed by the CPS being sent to serve a closure notice on the bar).[7] Attorney Chad Williamson, who represented the bar in its legal battle against the local and provincial bureaucracies over the pandemic diktats, announced that he will be looking at ways to hold the involved agencies accountable for their imposition of pandemic-related anti-business tyranny.
- Artur Pawlowski, the pastor of the Cave of Adullam Church in Calgary, fought back against the discriminatory diktats against church services by ordering CPS officers and an AHS inspector who disrupted a Holy Week worship service in the church by coming in without a warrant in search of alleged "COVID-19 violations" to leave the church, calling the intruding officers Nazis and Gestapo.[8] Pawlowski, who had seen similar such tactics used by the then-ruling Communist Polish United Workers' Party while living in his native Poland, was correct in his action, as Section 176 of the Criminal Code of Canada makes it a crime to disrupt a worship service,[9] thereby making the CPS officers' and AHS inspector's warrantless intrusion, which was done with the intention of intimidation of religious worshipers, illegal. Pastor Pawlowski later pointed out that religious clergy and business owners need to find the courage to stand up to the totalitarian actions of politicians and unelected public officials who impose illegal decrees and engage in actions intended to infringe on human rights, discriminate and intimidate, stating that such actions are unacceptable.[10]
- When the CPS later sent a SWAT team to accompany the same health bureaucrat to make another attempt to illegally disrupt a worship service in a show of intimidation, Pawlowski stood his ground and ran the officers and the bureaucrat off after refusing to let them into his church and again calling them out for Nazi-like behavior.[11]
- Rebel News subsequently reported that the CPS had obtained a secret warrant from sympathetic liberal judge M. David Gates[12] to use any force necessary - including the illegal use of force to haul Pawlowski before a kangaroo court and unjustly jail him on a false "contempt" charge for refusing to allow the CPS and the AHS bureaucrats to violate the Criminal Code by their illegal disruptions of his church services.[13] Pawlowski was able to avoid being illegally arrested by the CPS during a worship service when hundreds of people showed up in support of him for the service, though he has since been served with a "health order" from the City of Calgary demanding that standards be met to prevent the city taking action (i.e. illegal seizure) against his church building, similar to what happened to GraceLife Church[14] in Edmonton.[15]
- On May 8, 2021, soon after the conclusion of a weekend worship service at Pawlowski's church (in which congregants ejected the CPS from the church after CPS officers tried to illegally disrupt that service[16]), a heavily-armed CPS SWAT team stormed in Gestapo style and illegally arrested Pawlowski on a false charge of "incitement" for opening the church in defiance of unconstitutional lockdown diktats,[17] after which he was taken to be held in a local jail where he was treated as a political prisoner for exercising his faith, was illegally abused by corrupt CPS officers and was refused contact with his attorneys, while the liberal media, in acts of journalistic unprofessionalism, gleefully cheered the pastor's arrest;[18] after that egregious treatment was exposed on the Rebel News site following an interview with him, Pawlowski was allowed a brief phone call with his attorneys (one of which, Sarah Miller, later reported in an interview that Pawlowski's legal team were working to get him released and noted the poor treatment he received while in jail[19]). Soon after the interview, Pawlowski was released on bail, but still faces a hearing in court on his refusal to bow to the illegal persecution being perpetrated against him for choosing God over the State;[20] controversially, the director of the Calgary Remand Centre, where Pawlowski was being held (along with his brother Dawid, who was arrested at the same time), decided, for purely political reasons and in defiance of the presiding judge's release order, to illegally refuse to release them for several hours before finally deciding to do so once the director's actions began drawing public scrutiny.[21] Even after being released, the Pawlowskis were followed home by CPS vehicles and a helicopter in an illegal act of harassment and intimidation. Pastor Pawlowski also reported that at his bail hearing, he showed up while kept in leg irons[22] and was told that AHS had sought to keep him in solitary confinement - which is considered a form of torture - for 24 days under the specious claim of "COVID-19 protection measures";[23] because of the illegal actions taken by the remand centre employees (including denying him the right to speak to his attorneys), the hearing for Pawlowski has been delayed.[24]
- The CPS also derelicted its duty by choosing to ignore reports that some anonymous pro-lockdown cranks had also caused trouble for Pawlowski's church with several malicious acts of vandalism as well as by spreading nails and dog feces around the church parking lot; those incidents - which could be defined as hate crimes due to their nature - were simply disregarded by the CPS for political reasons.[25]
- After Pawlowski had the unjust charges against him suspended in a Calgary court,[26] vindictive CPS officers, for no justifiable reason, again illegally arrested Pawlowski and his brother Dawid as part of their politically-motivated campaign of illegal Gestapo-style harassment and persecution against them for standing up to the illegal CCP flu diktats being imposed by the Jason Kenney regime.[27]
- Rebel News head Ezra Levant, along with a large number of other Twitter posters, condemned the CPS for its persecution of Christian pastors on behalf of AHS in response to a Twitter post by the CPS where it congratulated the public for "...(working) with us to promote community safety".[28]
- Another house of worship came under attack by the CPS at the behest of Alberta Health Services when Fairview Baptist Church began being surveilled by the CPS, as well as CPS-escorted AHS bureaucrats twice[29] trying to illegally disrupt worship services and the church's pastor, Tim Stephens, being illegally ticketed multiple times for defying the unconstitutional lockdown edicts of Jason Kenney by holding indoor worship services at full capacity.[30]
- On May 16, 2021, Stephens was illegally[31] arrested by the CPS at the behest of AHS following a worship service without justifiable charge; the CPS refused to tell Rebel News why they were arresting him.[32] Ezra Levant criticized the CPS for the illegal arrest, accusing them of cowardice in going after a Christian minister while giving free passes to pro-"Palestine" protesters stirring up trouble in Calgary.[33] Stephens was later released from jail at a bail hearing,[34] with attorney and Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms president John Carpay making note of the illegality of the actions of the CPS and AHS against Stephens. The case against Stephens by AHS, which had made a dubious claim of "contempt of court", was eventually dropped because it was discovered that AHS had never served Stephens with the court order it claimed he had "violated".[35]
- Even after Stephens' victory, however, the CPS vindictively attempted to serve him with the same court order the following evening, under the flimsy claim that they had served the order to someone else named Tim Stephens; the following morning at a Sunday morning worship service at Fairview Baptist Church, an AHS representative accompanied by two CPS officers attempted to barge into the church and illegally disrupt the service but were stopped by two congregants who cited Section 176(2) of the Criminal Code, after which the intruders returned to their vehicles and left, making no further attempts to disrupt the service.[36]
- Following an underground worship service (necessitated by AHS' recent illegal seizure of the Fairview Baptist Church building two weeks prior) that was being spied on by the CPS at the behest of AHS, Stephens was illegally arrested for a second time by the CPS on June 14, 2021 at his home in front of his family[37] on what were later revealed to be specious charges of "violating public health orders" regarding his church services, for which Stephens is currently being unjustly held in the Calgary Remand Centre (and where he continues to be held after refusing bail conditions that demanded he hold "socially distant" services in compliance with the AHS diktats against places of religious worship).[38]
- The CPS also drew criticism when it turned a blind eye to plans by Antifa to hold a "Defund the Police" rally which would be held in conjunction with a pro-"Palestine" rally in downtown Calgary, as well as ignoring the lack of face mask wearing and social distancing by both leftist rallies despite the CCP flu pandemic edicts imposed by Alberta "conservative" premier Jason Kenney.[39]
- The CPS came under criticism for doing little to stop Antifa punks from crashing and violently disrupting a peaceful anti-CCP flu "vaccine" protest at the Foothills Medical Centre on September 13, 2021, though at least two of the punks were arrested for their criminal actions.[40]
