Legal Aid Providers

Legal Aid providers are solicitors who do legal aid work. These solicitors are funded through Legal aid.

Cuts in providers[edit]

Since the introduction of Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO), there has been a significant cut in those providing legal aid. This was identified in the legal aid statistics bulletin which found that in the past five years before 2018, legal aid providers had fallen by a third.^[1] Furthermore, 37 legal aid providers have collapsed since April 2020, which is more than 70 offices. Rosaleen Kilbane, a housing solicitor, has said "I don't think we can survive in our current form." She also shares that she has to turn away 4 people for every 1 person she assists due to issues with capacity.^[2]

The table below demonstrates the number of legal aid providers for 4 different areas of law in 5 of the most income deprived areas in 2019. These areas were found using data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.^[3]
