Homework Two Answers

1. What do you think were the three most important causes of the American Revolution. a. Colonists accepted John Locke's philosophy of natural rights and a social contract, which conflicted with rule by a monarchy. b. Legally, colonies disagreed with "virtual representation." c. British burdens hurt nearly all Colonists in all walks of life.

Good, but use your own words.

2. Who used the phrase "taxation without representation," and why? Patrick Henry used the phrase 'taxation without representation' because the colonies were being taxed by England, without a representative who was directly affected by those taxes.

Excellent.

3. What was the Boston Tea Party? Samuel Adams led a group of colonists, all dressed up as Indians, into the Boston harbor, where they dumped all the tea into the water.

Good.

4. Do you blame anyone for the Salem Witch Trials? Explain. The Salem Witch Trials seemed to be a ridiculous conflict started by either liars, attention seekers, or the mentally ill, and the legal system there was used the wrong way, thus resulting in the execution of many people who were so obviously not real witches.

Good.

5. True or false: colonies having more religious freedom had less conflict with the King. Explain your answer. True. Because the colonists were so afraid of England taking over them and redesigning their religious system, they fought harder.

"They fought harder" implies more

6. Briefly discuss (in a few sentences) any of the debate or discussion topics from the lecture, or mysteries (see H3 below for the link). Should England have been able to impose direct taxes on the colonies? No. The colonies had no direct representation in England, and weren't very connected to England by very much besides trade. They didn't have any say in legal matters in England.

Good, but a bit repetitive with answer #2 above.

7. Explain the meaning of the political cartoon on the right. As with all cartoons, pay particular attention to all of its details. Provide a rough estimate for its date. The meaning of the cartoon is that the colonies had to join together as one body, or be picked apart one by one. But aside from the meaning of the cartoon, I find it humorous, that if the snake is already cut apart into that many pieces, it is already dead.

Good, but didn't answer the last question, "Provide a rough estimate for its date." (Minus 2).

H2. Explain how Britain taxed the colonies, and whether you think it was right for Britain to do so. Britain taxed the colonies at their weakest points (after the war) and took much from the colonies by placing tax on things like sugar and tea, just so that they could make more money. It was wrong for Britain to demand money from the poor colonies for small things, in order to gain more revenue.

Superb.

H4. Identify key differences between colonial America and England in their cultures, their laws, their economy, or anything else. The Americans were given the privilege of 'freedom of the press,' something that, to this day, the English do not have.

Excellent!!

H5. Discuss any of the debate or discussion topics from the lecture. Does the legal system or the Puritans -- or neither -- deserve blame for the Salem Witch Trials? Neither. I think the Witch Trials were simply products of foolish, superstitious individuals.

Good.
