The Peninsular War was a war between Napoleonic France, Spain and Great Britain from 1808 to 1813.
The Duke of Wellington used combination of traditional tactics and guerrilla warfare, the latter mainly carried out by Spanish partisans.
It forced Napoleon to keep a significant force in Spain while fighting in Eastern Europe and Russia. It therefore contributed to the weakening and eventual fall of his empire. It also tied up a large part of the British Army and its best commanders, including Sir John Moore, keeping them out of the War of 1812.
It was part of the greater Napoleonic Wars.
