The Phantom of the Opera is a 1909 novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It is the story of a tragic love triangle between a young singer, her childhood friend and a mysterious and disfigured stranger who haunts the opera house in which the story is set. It is probably best known for Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical adaptation, which has become the longest running musical in history. There have also been numerous film and television versions.
