1. Who were the main protagonists in the "Cold War", and what was the period of this "war"?

The U.S.S.R. was the protagonist in the Cold War and it lasted from 1945 to 1991.

2. Identify the two wars that caused over 50,000 American deaths which occurred between 1945 and 1980, and briefly state your view of the American role in those wars. Do you agree with our acceptance of the outcomes?

The Korean War and the Vietnam War caused over 50,000 American deaths. Many of these casualties may not have been necessary; specifically in the Vietnam War. The only reason that the United States entered this war was because President Johnson was worried about gaining popularity. He believed that if it looked like America was being attacked, then he would be more popular. It is interesting that the opposite of that is true today. President Bush did not gain popularity when we were attacked by terrorists in 2001. Once Johnson sent thousands of young men to the battle field, he did not do what was necessary to win the war. By doing this he caused many unnecessary American casualties. We should not have entered the Vietnam War. In contrast, it was good that America entered the Korean War. We did accomplish what we set out to accomplish. South Korea was also spared from becoming a communist country like North Korea.

Excellent answer, but note that President Bush did gain popularity immediately after we were attacked by terrorists in 2001. However, that popularity steadily declined since then. But your overall answer is superb.

3. Pick an aspect of the Civil Rights Movement that impressed you most, and explain why.

The organized “sit-ins” really impressed me. The way that white Americans adamantly stuck up for blacks who were not being treated fairly shows how we should look out for each other. Most of the time we only hear about whites being cruel and prejudiced towards blacks; here we see white people reaching out and taking time to help African American people.

4. What do you like best about the 80th Congress? Explain.

I like how productive the 80th congress was. They were the most influential session of congress in all of American history.

5. Who do you think was the most important person between 1945 and 1980 in American history, and why?

Rosa Parks was one of the most influential people in this time period for both good and bad reasons. She really helped put an end to segregation in the public transportation system. This was a very good thing and helped diminish quite a bit of southern prejudice. She also unknowingly set the stage for feminists. Although she herself was not at all feminist, she started the idea of women holding their own and accomplishing great things.

Debate: Were the 1950s more conservative than today?

Yes, the 1950s absolutely were more conservative than today. Abortion was illegal. Murder is the opposite of conservatism.

7. H3. Your view of the ERA, please.

The ERA is an illusion. At first glance, it seems to make perfect sense: make everyone equal and everyone will be happy. If that thought is followed through to conclusion it becomes evident that this theory does not work. God made men and women different for a reason. If both men and women are equal, major parts of society will be neglected.
