Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة‎ al-Qāhirah) is the modern "City of a Thousand Minarets", founded in 969 and built on the remains of Ancient Egyptian settlements. The capital of Egypt with a population of about ten million people, its Greater Cairo metropolis of 21 million residents is the largest city area in Africa and the Middle East.
