Americans United for Separation of Church and State is a liberal organization which asks the IRS to revoke the tax-exempt status of conservative Churches which its leadership disagrees with.[1][2]
The leader of Americans United was Barry Lynn, who is an ordained minister in the liberal United Church of Christ. The United Church of Christ invited Barack Obama to speak at one of its functions and was not criticized by Lynn despite his outrage at more conservative churches for similar political activities.[3] In 2018, the organization chose Rachel K. Laser, a strong opponent of religious freedom for Christians, as its leader.[4]
Originally founded as Protestants and Other Americans United for Separation of Church and State (POAU) in 1947, the original founding members were Charles Clayton Morrison, Glenn L. Archer,[5] Edwin McNeill Poteat, G. Bromley Oxnam, and Joseph Martin Dawson.[6]
