Cumbria

Cumbria is a county of north-west England, on the Scottish border. It was formed in 1974 by the merger of the former counties of Cumberland and Westmorland with the Furness peninsula (previously part of Lancashire) and Dentdale (previously part of Yorkshire). Much of the county is occupied by the Lake District National Park, which contains England's highest mountains. Other areas include the western slopes of the North Pennines, the Vale of Eden, a lowland valley which includes the main towns of Penrith and carlisle and which merges into the estuarine lowlands of the Solway Firth, the industrial districts of West Cumbria, which include the former coal ports of Maryport and Whitehaven and the steel town Workington, and Furness, which includes the shipbuilding town Barrow in Furness.

The county town of Cumbria is Carlisle.

Cumbria also contains the western end of Hadrian's Wall.
