Matt Innis (born October 24, 1970, age 52) is a conservative businessman and U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Nebraska who unsuccessfully ran in 2020 to attempt unseating the incumbent anti-Trump Republican senator Ben Sasse. He was the chairman of the Lancaster County Republican Party from 2011 to 2015.

2020 U.S. Senate election in Nebraska[edit]

It was stated on August 2, 2019 that Innis would run to oppose Sen. Sasse.[2] Innis has effectively rebuked Sasse for the latter's refusal to sign an endorsement of Trump's re-election efforts, correctly pointing out the senator's opposition to President Trump.[3]

It was announced in late February 2020 that Innis had officially filed to run for the Senate seat.[4]

Campaign[edit]

As part of his campaign trail, Innis traveled to North Platte, Nebraska in early March 2020 to further his anti-establishment, right-wing populist campaign message.[5]

Establishment derailing attempt[edit]

After Innis had spent a mere $457 in digital advertising without yet having reported it to the FEC, the establishment-led Douglas County Republican Party seized the opportunity and reported it to the Senate Ethics Committee, suggesting in the complaint that a maximum $50,000 fine can be imposed by the attorney general.[6]

Endorsements[edit]

Innis' run was endorsed by the Lincoln County Republican Party and the Scottsbluff County Republican Party.[7][8]

Republican primary results[edit]

The primaries for both parties were held on May 12, 2020.[9] Despite strong campaign efforts, Innis lost to Sen. Sasse by a large margin, only managing to garner just shy of 25% of the vote,[10] with much largely attributed to Sasse's advantage as an incumbent.

Political positions[edit]

According to his campaign website, Innis is a thorough conservative who is 100% pro-life, an opponent of red flag laws, and a strong supporter of Donald Trump.[11] In addition, Innis also supports Country of Origin Labeling regulations for meat as a protective measure for Nebraskan businesses from being out-competed by low-priced foreign sellers.[12]
