The Kurds are an ethnic group living in a region which extends from the Taurus mountains, to the Zagros Mountains in Turkey, Iran, and Iraq.[1] They speak Kurdish, a language belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. Most Kurds strongly desire a homeland, and their nationalism has led to them being persecuted, especially in Turkey, which is home to more Kurds than any other nation. Most Kurds are Sunni Muslims; Sufism (a spiritual and universalist movement founded by Hazrat Inayat Khan early in the 20th century) is widely practiced as well.
