1. Was the main goal of the newly elected President Lincoln to end slavery, or save the Union?

The main point of his presidency was to save the union, and keep the south from succeeding from the north.

Correct!

2. Explain the purposes of the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution.

The thirteenth was made to abolish slavery: Giving all slaves freedom. The fourteenth was made to give equal rights to all races: Making sure that all people, black and white alike have the same freedoms, and privileges. the fifteenth was made to give all races a chance to vote: Giving all men of any color to right to vote in any election.

Superb.

3. Who was your favorite military figure from the Civil War, and why?

My favorite is probably 'Stonewall' Jackson. Not because of the side he fought for, or because of the side he opposed, but because of his bravery and cunning. He had courage, and was greatly respected. He was a great military figure. Imagine being called one of the greatest generals in our country's history!

Excellent.

4. How would you have handled Reconstruction differently?

Maybe I would have done more to abolish the Ku Klux Klan. More then they already were doing at the time. I would have made it one of my top priorities to get rid of the K.K.K; sending out union spies to find their headquarters, or simply battling them. And I probably would have paid more attention to the south, and what they were doing or planning. Even though they were re-building themselves, they still succeeded once, and they might do so again, if they had been pushed.

Very interesting. Good point about the KKK.

5. Abraham Lincoln was homeschooled. Do you see any characteristics in him that might have reflected his homeschooling, such as his independent thinking?

I think maybe his ability to be open minded could reflect some homeschooling traits. Also, maybe his sense of humor as well. Like in his letter the McClellen when he wrote: My Dear McClellan: If you are not using the army, I should like to borrow it for a short while. Yours respectfully, Abraham Lincoln.

I find that to be humorous, and maybe that could be a homeschooling trait as well. But also, back them a lot of people were home-schooled, before the public school became really popular. So he may not have been seen as any different, or maybe it was the public schoolers who were seen as different. It's hard to tell.

Worth learning about which side was the "different" one! Terrific answer, especially about being open minded. Will use that as a model answer.

6. Please interpret the cartoon about the dream to the right. Its title is "Abraham's dream!--'Coming events cast their shadows before.'" Lincoln is fleeing to left while wearing a Scotsman's plaid cap and a cape. He declares, "This don't remind me of any joke!!"

I think the idea here is the Lincoln is having a dream, or a nightmare that McClellen wins the election of 1864. It was rumored that Lincoln had prophetic dreams that often came true, or were of some importance.

Right about Lincoln's fears for the upcoming election. About the dreams, the point is not whether they came true, but that Lincoln supposedly feared they would come true.

7. Please interpret the cartoon with Columbia below. The caption is, "The Chinese Question." Columbia says, "Hands off, gentlemen. America means fair play for all men." I think that columbia, or lady liberty is telling the U.S that every man has equal rights, and equal amounts of respect as said in the fourteenth amendment. The man siting next to her is also probably chinese.

Good, but tie it into the immigration debate. (Minus 1).
Well done! Score: 69/70.--Aschlafly 19:34, 24 October 2008 (EDT)
