Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio founded on June 15, 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Toshio Suzuki, Isao Takahata, and Yasuyoshi Tokuma. Many of Ghibli’s films are very acclaimed by audiences and critics alike, and get a very big cast when dubbed into English. So far, seven Ghibli films were nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, with only Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron winning the prize.[1]

Popularity and success[edit]

At the Japanese Box Office, three Ghibli films are in the Top 10 highest grossing movies ever being Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, and Spirited Away which are at number 8, 7, and 2 respectively. The Boy and the Heron and Princess Mononoke are at number 15 and 13 respectively as well.

Sales from merchandise are very high, such as My Neighbor Tortoro grossing $1.4 billion in home merchandise such as home video and plushies.[2]
