Northern flying squirrels have a special membrane that enables them to glide in the air. They defy the theory of evolution.[Citation Needed]

Northern flying squirrels thrive in many places in the United States, including the Dakotas and Wyoming, and the Appalachia, Rocky Mountain and Sierra Nevada mountains. They are also prevalent in Canada.
