Michigan State Legislative Special Elections, 2012

Two special elections for the Michigan State Legislature took place in 2012. These elections were called to fill vacancies in the Michigan House of Representatives, Districts 29 & 51.
How vacancies are filled[edit]
If there is a vacancy in the Michigan State Legislature, the governor must call for a special election to fill the vacancy or direct that the vacancy be filled at the next general election.[1][2]
If the vacancy happens after the statewide primary election, the party organizations in the district select the party's nominee. The nominee must be voted on no later than 21 days after the vacancy occurred and at least 10 days before the general election.[3]

Tim Melton (D) resigned in September to take a position at StudentsFirst, a group promoting public education reform.[4] A special election primary was held on November 8, 2011. A special general election was held on February 28, 2012.[5]

Paul Scott (R) was recalled on November 8, 2011. A special election to replace him was held on February 28, 2012. Candidates were selected by their respective political parties.[7][8][9]
