Joseph M American History Homework Four Instructor: Andy Schlafly Read the lecture and answer these questions:

1. What was the "Revolution of 1800"? The Revolution of 1800 was when Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams for the presidency. It was called a revolution because it was the first ever complete peaceful shift in power between political parties.

Correct.

2. If you were the president, would you have approved the Louisiana Purchase? Explain. Yes, I would have approved the Louisiana Purchase, because it was one, a great deal, only $11.2 million dollars for thousands and thousands of acres and two, it would be safer to be able to not have too many countries bordering my country, because this would reduce the threat of conflict and allow me to control the Pacific more than I would be able to otherwise.

Superb, though not much coast along the Pacific was involved.

3. Identify a cause of the War of 1812. One of the reasons was the impressments of sailors into the British fleets, when the British would sometimes round up American sailors and force them to work on their ships. Another reason was that there were many unresolved issues from the Revolutionary War.

Excellent, will use as a model.

4. Describe what you like most about the Monroe Administration. What I like most about the Monroe administration was the Monroe Doctrine, in which a European colony could not colonize North or South America. This was very helpful because this meant that Britain couldn’t just go in and colonize a lot of America.

Superb.

5. Explain what is meant by "Jacksonian Democracy."

Jacksonian Democracy was when politicians pandered to the middle class and poor people to get their votes. This method is still used today when many politicians say “I will lower taxes for people who earn less than 150 thousand dollars. This method is not usually like by wealthy people.
Excellent!

6. Explain what the Marshall Court is known for. The Marshall Court was best known for the numerous decisions such as Marbury vs. Madison or Fletcher vs. Peck that it passed that expanded federal power.

Superb, but the decisions are "issued", not "passed".

'7. Identify the figures in the cartoon, provide an approximate date, and describe the likely viewpoint of the cartoonist: The figures represent different countries: John Bull is England, Bruin the bear is Russia, and Columbia is the United States. It was drawn in 1813 and represents the Treaty of Ghent, which Russia negotiated with Britain and the U.S.. The artist’s viewpoint is probably that Russia is the peacekeeper and negotiator in ending the War of 1812.

Good analysis, could say a bit more. See model answers.

The text in the cartoon from left to right (clockwise direction) is: John Bull: Pray Mr Bruin try if you can make up this little Difference between us-The Wasps and Hornets have Stung me so hard I wish I had never disturbed their Nests. Columbia: I thank you Mr Bruin but I cannot trust the Bull. 'Tho he has promised to draw his HORNS he must be safe bound to the Stake before I treat with him. Bruin: Let me unite your hands Madam-Johny and I have been very friendly since I sent him my Fleet to take care of----

Honors Questions Answer three out of the following questions (in addition to the questions above):

H2. Explain the impact of the War of 1812 on the Federalist Party. The impact of the war was that the Federalists greatly opposed the war and towards the end were having a secret meeting to decide whether to secede from the Union, but this meeting could not have been at a worse time. The war ended and the Federalists looked like they were plotting against the Union. The Federalist Party never again rose to power.

Excellent.

H3. Discuss any debate topic or mystery related to 1800-1840. Was the so-called corrupt bargain real and, if so, was there anything wrong with it?

The corrupt bargain was when Senator John Quincy Adams struck a bargain with Senator Henry Clay, that if Clay convinced congressmen to vote for him Adams would appoint Clay Secretary of State

I think that the corrupt bargain was real and this is what was wrong with it. Firstly, this was essentially bribing a congressman. Secondly, he probably wouldn’t be a good Secretary of State. And third of all, Adams wasn’t doing the good thing for the country, but rather, was trying to further his own agenda.

Superb analysis.

H4. How did the North and South feel about tariffs, and why? The North did not mind tariffs as much because they did not need a lot of things from overseas, but the South, as their only industry was cotton, needed much machinery. Since the machinery came from overseas they had to pay a lot when the tariffs were invoked, so the North didn’t really mind tariffs, but the South did.

Good, but realize that the North wanted tariffs to protect their factories and companies. Hence the term "protective tariff."
Excellent work. Score: 99/100.--Aschlafly 19:34, 11 October 2008 (EDT)
