The Bristol Channel is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean which penetrates the land-mass of Great Britain, separating south Wales from the peninsula of south-west England. It narrows further inland to become the estuary of the River Severn.
A number of major ports are located on or near the shoreline of the Bristol Channel: Bristol itself (with its outport of Avonmouth), Newport, Cardiff and Swansea.
