Utrecht is a city in the centre of the Netherlands and the capital of the province of Utrecht. It is the location of a university founded in 1636 and is one of the oldest Dutch universities, and with a population of 288,401 (2007) it is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands. The city is the seat of a bishopric and is a major communications hub and rail center.[1]

History[edit]

Utrecht is best known as the site of lengthy peace negotiations to end the Wars of Spanish Succession in the 18th century. The resulting peace, called the Treaty of Utrecht, was signed in April 1713.
