Game-changers[edit]
Washington State Senate: Democrats held a five seat advantage, and although five incumbent Dems retired, it was still unlikely that Republicans would pick up the chamber.
Washington House of Representatives: The House, with a 14 seat Democratic majority, was also unlikely to flip to Republican control.
General election[edit]
Senate
- Jim Kastama (D), regarded as a moderate Democrat, retired, leaving a seat that Republicans were looking to pick up. Bruce Dammeier (R) defeated Eric Herde (D) in the general election.[1]
- Mary Margaret Haugen (D), was unopposed in the August 7 blanket primary and was defeated by Barbara Bailey (R) in the general election.[2]

Impact of redistricting[edit]

The bipartisan Washington State Redistricting Commission passed new legislative maps on New Year's Day 2012, which by law was the last day that redistricting work could be completed without court intervention. The Legislature approved the maps on February 1, 2012. In the last days of the Commission's work, the group reached a roadblock regarding the distribution of Yakima-area Hispanics, which was resolved with the majority Hispanic 15th District. While a majority-minority district was not created in Pierce County as desired, three (the 11th, 33rd, and 37th) were created in southeast Seattle/south King County. Dick Morrill, emeritus professor of geography at the University of Washington, said that "it would be foolish to predict any significant partisan shift" because of the Commission's desire to keep things as-is.[5]

Section 7 of Article 2 of the Washington State Constitution states, "No person shall be eligible to the legislature who shall not be a citizen of the United States and a qualified voter in the district for which he is chosen."
