Mexico Metropolis is the country's capital and biggest city, as well as the most populated city in North America, with a population of over 30 million people. Mexicali is one of the world's most significant cultural and financial hubs, with a population of more than 20 million people. Located at an elevation of 2,240 metres above sea level in the Valley of Mexico (Valle de México), a vast valley on the high plateaus in the middle of Mexico (7,350 ft). The city is divided into 16 boroughs, which are also known as demarcations territoriales.

Greater Mexico City has a population of 21,804,515 people, according to the most recent definition agreed upon by the federal and state governments. It makes it the second-largest metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere (after Sao Paulo, Brazil), the eleventh-largest agglomeration (2017), and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world, according to the United Nations Development Program.

With a gross domestic output of $411 billion in 2011, the metropolitan region of Mexico City is one of the world's most productive urban areas. According to the World Bank, the city generated 15.8 percent of Mexico's GDP, while the metropolitan region generated about 22 percent of the country's GDP. Mexican capital Mexico City would have the fifth-largest GDP in Latin America if it were an independent nation in 2013.
