Fasting

From Conservapedia

Fasting is the practice of refraining from eating, or to eat less often, typically for spiritual purposes. It can build one's character and, when used sensibly, promote one's health. Jesus built his strength against temptation by fasting, as described in the New Testament.

The verb "to fast" is one of the oldest in the English language, dating back to at least the 1100s.
