Amoebic encephalitis, also spelled amoebic meningoencephalitis, refer to several potentially fatal infections of the central nervous system by free-living amoebae, often referred to in the media as a "brain-eating amoeba" infection. Types include:

• Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis
• Naegleriasis, also known as primary amoebic meningoencephalitis

Over 600 cases have been reported globally as of 2019.^[1]
