Bourgas

Bourgas:

City of eastern Rumelia (southern Bulgaria) and port on the Black Sea; six hours distant from Constantinople. The Jews of Bourgas came originally from Yambol and Carnabat, the first family settling in 1879. There are a synagogue, a Talmud Torah, and a school for girls, with about 80 pupils, under the management of the Alliance Israélite Universelle. The Presente family of Bourgas is the richest in Bulgaria. In 1901, in a total population of 5,000, there were 550 Jews, mostly Greek.
