Achan was an Israelite of the tribe of Judah. At the Battle of Jericho, Achan stole some of the devoted things and later hid them under his tent. After the Israelites were routed at Ai, the Lord revealed to Joshua that someone had stole the devoted things. Joshua was able to find out who had done it through God's help and Achan confessed. Achan and his family were promptly stoned, burned, and had a pile of rocks piled upon them. The Bible calls the valley where this was done the Valley of Achor (meaning trouble).
